File Setup Guide
Please review this page as you prepare your files for print.
We prefer print-ready PDFs for most jobs, but we accept a variety of file types.
For web store orders, only PDFs, JPGs, TIFFs, and PNGs are accepted. If you’d like to place a web store order but don’t have access to the required file type, please contact us for assistance.
Here’s the full list of accepted file types (please note some jobs may have specific file requirements):
- Adobe PDFs (.pdf)
- Adobe Illustrator (.ai)
- Adobe Photoshop (.psd)
- EPS (.eps)
- JPG/JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg)
- PNG (.png)
- TIFF (.tiff)
Important! Please remember to flatten transparency and convert text to outlines before sending us your files.
All print files must have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch) at the desired print size.
To calculate the minimum pixel dimensions required to print your file at a desired size, multiply the desired length of each side (in inches) by 300 pixels.
Example: To create an 11” x 17” print at 300dpi, the pixel dimensions of the image should be at least 3300px (11 inches x 300 pixels) x 5100px (17 inches x 300 pixels).
Alternatively, to determine the maximum print size based on the pixel dimensions of your artwork, divide the image width (in pixels) by 300 and the image height (in pixels) by 300. The product of your calculation is the maximum printable size in inches that will maintain a resolution of 300 dpi.
Example: An image that’s 1800px (W) x 1200px (H) can be printed at a maximum size of 6” (W) x 4” (H) while maintaining a resolution of 300dpi (1800 pixels divided by 300 equals 6, and 1200 pixels divided by 300 equals 4).
If you only have access to lower-resolution files, or you’re having trouble determining the resolution of your files, please contact us for assistance. Lower-resolutions files may be ok for some projects, especially for larger print sizes that won’t be viewed up close.
CMYK, RGB, or PMS?
As a general rule of thumb, we ask that you submit all files in CMYK color.
Some projects may require different color modes to ensure color accuracy. If this applies to your project, we’ll be sure to let you know.
If you only have access to files in a certain color mode or you’re not sure how to check the color mode of your files, please reach out to our team for assistance.
Bleed & Safe Zone
Files with design elements extending to the edge of the product must include .25” of bleed (extension beyond the cut line) as well as at least .125” safe zone (the space between the cut line and critical design elements) on all four sides.
Designs for small products, thicker papers, and custom-shaped products should use larger safe zones. Designs for scored products should apply the document safe zone value to each side of the scoreline.
Cutting and Scoring
If your project involves cutting and scoring, please add these elements as separate and clearly marked layers in your artwork.
Specialty Print Techniques
If your project involves specialty printing techniques like letterpress, foil stamping, or spot UV, please add these elements as separate and clearly marked layers in your artwork.
Specialty Print File Setup
Specialty print techniques like letterpress, foiling, or spot UV, may require extra steps during file setup. If your project incorporates any of these techniques, we may ask for additional files and/or adjustments to meet the specifications required for your project. Please contact us for more information.
Print & Layout Design Services
All orders undergo a complimentary pre-press review in which our team checks your art files for potential issues and makes any necessary minor corrections. Simple layout and file setup issues are corrected free of charge.
More extensive design adjustments will require pre-approval by the client and will carry additional charges. We always recommend hiring your own designer to ensure your files are print-ready before you submit them to us for printing, as this prevents unanticipated delays and expenses.
That said, if you’re not a designer or your business doesn’t have one, we offer limited print layout and file setup services billed at an hourly rate of $100.
Please note: we are happy to set up files for print or make alterations to design layouts, but we do not create content. This means all logos, fonts, graphics, or any other elements you wish to use in your final design must be provided to use beforehand. If you need help creating or selecting these elements for your designs, this is outside of our scope of service.
Important: Custom Hemp Solutions is not responsible for proofing your content. We will make suggestions if we see something out of place, and we may make minor layout adjustments subject to client approval. It is always the client’s responsibility to make sure the design, layout, and copy are free of errors before approving the final proof. Once your proof is approved, your project will be printed according to the specifications of the approved file(s).
